26 Jul TO ALL MY CLIENTS: WARNING!
Though I sent out an e-mail a few weeks ago, I want to make my services ancillary for everyone to whom I have provided web hosting in the past, as a courtesy to you for your loyalties over the years. With just a few weeks remaining, I want to be certain that everyone knows I can no longer provide hosting for your website, unfortunately. I have already moved my own database and files over to a new host, and have effectively also transferred about 50% of my previously hosted clients. As stated in my e-mail, my current hosting account will be expiring shortly and I may not be able to access your website’s files once this occurs. I have also taken the precursory courtesy of backing up each of your databases and files in preparation of transferring things over for you at my earliest convenience.
If you have not yet transferred your website through me and have recently added blogs, files, pages, or if you have edited your content in any way, you will lose your changes upon transfer. All of my hosted clients are using WordPress as a database, so please follow these steps to download an XML file:
- Login to your WordPress dashboard
- On your left menu, hover your mouse over “Tools” (there is a wrench icon beside the word)
- Click on Export
- Though it is the default selection, please be certain that the button to the left of “All Content” is clicked
- Scroll down and click “Download Export File”
- This file will be saved to your default “Downloads” folder unless you specify otherwise
- The name of the file will have the extension of .xml and will begin with the name of your domain
It’s not a perfect solution, but it will help you preserve your existing content. You can also perform this export as often as you see fit and continue preserving your content long-term.
Once your website and database have been transferred over, additional web maintenance services from me will require hourly payment, billable each quarter. As I have stated before for your benefit, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE login to your dashboard at least once a month and update your plugins and database. It’s easy and can be done with just one click.
*Note that I am out of town from August 17th-August 26th for family obligations. I am also reporting for Jury Summons in the early morning hours of August 27th. Should my civic duty be required further, it may dramatically change my availability for the week of the 27th.
